The bodies of five foreign mountaineers who died in the Broad Peak avalanche have been transferred to Islamabad following a difficult high-altitude recovery operation.

The climbers died during an international expedition on Broad Peak in northern Pakistan.

At 8,047 metres, Broad Peak is the world’s 12th-highest mountain. It is also regarded as one of Pakistan’s most challenging peaks for high-altitude expeditions.

The recovered climbers were identified as Nima Sherpa, Nirmal Purja, Gyalu Sherpa, Wang Zhong and Kili Pemba.

Among them was Nirmal Purja, the renowned Nepalese-born British mountaineer.
